If you're a small business owner, chances are you've been searching for the right business card for you. With so many options on the market, and so many different credit card ecosystems, it's tough to identify the right fit for all small business owners. You have categories like bonus points on purchases, annual savings on services you might use for your own business, or you might just be looking for the right intro APR to transfer an existing balance.

For business owners, having the right credit card can transform everyday purchases into rewarding experiences and travel. For me, the American Express Business Gold Card stands out as a top contender, offering a mix of rewards, perks, and tools designed specifically for business owners. This comprehensive guide explores how you can unlock the card’s potential and decide if it’s the perfect fit for your business travel needs.

Key Features of the American Express Business Gold Card

Flexible Rewards Structure

One of the card’s most appealing features is its dynamic rewards system. Cardholders earn 4X Membership Rewards® points on the top two spending categories each billing cycle, from a list of six eligible categories. This flexibility ensures businesses maximize rewards where they spend the most. Eligible categories include:

• U.S. purchases for advertising in select media.

• U.S. purchases at U.S. gas stations.

• U.S. purchases at restaurants (including takeout and delivery).

• U.S. purchases for shipping.

• U.S. purchases from select technology providers.

• Airfare purchased directly from airlines.

These rewards are capped at $150,000 in combined purchases per calendar year, after which you earn 1X points on all purchases.

Welcome Offer

At time of writing, the American Express Business Gold Card currently offers an enticing welcome bonus: Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® points after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months of card membership. However, I have received direct mail for this business (thanks for reading, by the way) that offers as much as 200,000 points for $20,000 in spend over the first three months. For businesses with significant upfront expenses, when coupled with the bonus points you receive on the above categories, new cardholders could amass a huge amount of Amex points in their first year.

Annual Fee

I can't lie - the high annual fee is a little rough. The $375 annual fee may seem steep at first glance, but the benefits and rewards more than offset the cost for frequent travelers and businesses with high spending in bonus categories. You also have to compare it against its peers, where you can find annual fees as low as $95 per year, or as high as $695 per year, making the American Express Business Gold Card right in the middle of the range.

Travel Benefits

Airline Bonus

When you book flights using Membership Rewards® Pay with Points, you receive 25% points back on eligible flights booked through American Express Travel. This feature is capped at 250,000 points back per calendar year, offering considerable savings for frequent travelers that like to book via a portal like Amex Travel. However, if you're a regular reader of this site, you'll know that this is definitely not a good option to cash in your Amex points, but we'll talk more about that later.

The Hotel Collection

Cardholders gain access to The Hotel Collection, which provides a $100 credit for qualifying charges (such as dining and spa services) and potential room upgrades when staying at participating hotels. A minimum two-night stay of consecutive nights booked through American Express Travel is required to unlock these perks, but they can be well worth it.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

For international business travelers, the card waives foreign transaction fees, allowing you to make global purchases without additional fees impacting your bottom line. Critical for every business owner? No, but there are some who will make that a dealbreaker.

Additional Business Perks

Expense Management Tools

Managing business expenses is made simple with tools like Spend Manager℠ and integration options with QuickBooks. These features streamline tracking and reporting, saving valuable time.

Employee Cards

With the option to issue employee cards, you can extend purchasing power to your team while setting custom spending limits. Employee purchases also earn rewards, further boosting your points balance.

Purchase Protection

Eligible purchases made with the card are covered against damage or theft for up to 90 days from the purchase date. This added layer of protection offers peace of mind for high-value business purchases.

Maximizing Rewards for Travel

Strategic Spending

To get the most out of the 4X points rewards, focus your spending on the top two categories that align with your business needs. Whether it’s advertising, travel, or shipping, the flexibility ensures your rewards match your unique spending habits.

Booking Travel

Look - if you're pressed for time, or you don't want to have to dive into the wild world of credit card points, then use the American Express Travel portal to book flights and hotels. By leveraging the Pay with Points feature and receiving 25% points back, you can significantly reduce travel costs while enjoying premium travel experiences. Is it the best redemption of your points? Certainly not, and you'll be doing yourself a bit of a disservice by doing so, but think of it as a convenience tax. But you know what is the best way to use your points?

Transferring Points

Transferring points is pretty much always the best use of your points! American Express Membership Rewards® points can be transferred to a wide range of partner airline and hotel loyalty programs, offering even greater value and flexibility for business trips. They own an exclusive relationship with Delta Airlines, which transfers at a 1:1 ratio so you can take advantage of domestic route sweet spots.

Amex MR points also transfer out to partners like Virgin Atlantic (my favorite redemption for business and first class travel to Europe), as well as partners like ANA (The Room, anyone?) and Alaska. Finally, you can transfer points out to partners like Marriott on a 3:1 basis to book dream hotel rooms in destinations like the Maldives.

Comparing with Other Business Cards

Amex Business Platinum Card

The American Express Business Platinum Card, despite being one tier up from the Business Gold Card and is also offered by American Express, almost shouldn't be included here. While the Business Gold Card truly focuses on everyday purchases a small business owner may incur on a regular basis, the Business Platinum Card offers higher-end travel perks, including access to premium airport lounges and a larger welcome bonus. You also receive access to things like the American Express Concierge service, Platinum Card member exclusive perks (RIP Departures Magazine), and things like a monthly WalMart Plus credit.

However, its annual fee is significantly higher, making it better suited for businesses that prioritize travel over all else.

Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

The Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has a lower annual fee and earns 3X points on travel and select business categories. However, it lacks many of the premium travel benefits found with the Amex Business Gold Card, such as the 25% points back on flights. Some do prefer this card to the Business Gold Card thanks to it's lower annual fee and it being a part of the Chase ecosystem, rather than the American Express one. With Chase, while you may lose access to Delta as a transfer partner, you gain other partners like Hyatt where you can regularly find outsized value for dream hotel stays.

Is the Amex Business Gold Card Right for You?

Consider Your Business Spending

The card’s value is heavily tied to your spending habits. If your business spends heavily in one or more of the bonus categories (e.g., advertising, travel, or technology), you’ll quickly see a return on your investment.

Weighing the Annual Fee

At $375 per year, the annual fee might seem high, but the combination of rewards, travel benefits, and business perks can easily outweigh the cost. Calculate your expected rewards and savings to determine if it aligns with your needs.

Card Design

This may matter to some (like myself), so I thought it appropriate to include here. The American Express Business Gold Card (and it's consumer-oriented cousin) is a sleek card design of all gold with black accents. However, over the last few years American Express has rolled out new card designs for their suite of Gold Cards, including new flavors in rose gold and white gold. These new metal designs give a sleek look to the American Express card family.

Conclusion

The American Express Business Gold Card is a versatile and rewarding option for business travelers. Its flexible rewards structure, travel perks, and expense management tools make it a powerful asset for businesses aiming to optimize travel expenses and earn valuable rewards. By strategically leveraging its benefits, you can turn your business travel into a lucrative opportunity.
